Calendar of Events - August 2017

  • Thursday, August 3rd, 6:30pm: ExComm Meeting and Dinner. Let's check out 503W, which is located at, you guessed it, 503 West Colorado! Their menu is eclectic, featuring street food, bowls and burgers! We'll need reservations for this one, so let Sandy know by Tuesday, Aug 1st , that you'll be there ( or call 719-528-5483). For new Mensans, the ExComm Meeting is our business meeting and takes about two minutes to conduct. All members and guests are welcome at this event!
  • Friday, August 4th, 5pm: Give In To Beer Pressure. We're heading back to Cerberus! August is usually nice and warm so we can enjoy their wonderful patio - and the food isn't bad either! And, with a name like Cerberus, as you'd expect, it's "Dog friendly" on the deck and patio. (Dogs must be on a leash and non-aggressive.) Cerberus Brewing is located at 702 W Colorado Ave. Remember, if you know of a good brew-pub or happy hour bar in the local area that we have missed, please let Sean know. He can be reached by email:, or by cell phone: (719) 651-6706.
  • Saturday, August 5th, 10am: Caffeine Conundrum! In August, we'll be visiting Story Coffee at 120 East Bijou! It's small and quaint, with limited seating outside, but makes great coffee! Probably the reason for such great coffee is that the owners spent a full year traveling over 30,000 miles, visiting 45 states and over 200 coffee shops in order to ensure they would do it right when they set up their own coffee shop here in Colorado Springs! For more of their story, visit:! As always, if you hear of a new coffee place, let John know by phone (719) 571-0471or e-mail:
  • Wednesday, August 9th, 6pm: Mensa Mini-golf! Let's meet up at Adventure Mini Golf, 6550 Corporate Drive in Colorado Springs, just off Woodman and I-25. This is a family-friendly event, with a trophy that's even MORE glamorous than last year's. Cost for 18 challenging holes is $5 for adults, $4 for kids and seniors! Winner will be declared the Plains & Peaks Mini-golf Champion... and can keep that title until the next time we go mini-golfing!
  • Saturday, August 12th, 6pm: RSVP for BurgerQuest! Reply "yes" as soon as you can, but no later than 6pm today, August 12th .
  • Sunday, August 13th, 1pm: BurgerQuest 2017-08: We're meeting at Wyatt's Pub & Grill, 806 Village Center Dr., CoS 80919. Wyatt's offers a variety of "Pub Fare classics" as well as great burgers, sandwiches and pizza. RSVP by yesterday or before to George at 719-418-6073 (leave a message), or e-mail so we can let them know how many to expect. Even if you don't RSVP, come anyway, we'll make room. Be sure to bring the rugrats, BurgerQuest is kid-friendly.
  • Tuesday, August 15th, 6:00pm: Trivial Pursuits. We're playing Showdown, a 6- stage trivia contest featuring a wide variety of topics, at Buffalo Wild Wings, 2905 Geyser Drive (at I-25 and Lake, next to Outback Steaks and Tinseltown) - they claim to have 45 players and Wi-Fi so everybody should be able to play! We're drinking some adult beverages (if you want to) and noshing on wings and other Buffalo Wild Wings specialty foods like burgers and sandwiches! The actual game starts at 6:30pm, but if you want a game player you probably should get there earlier! Call or e-mail Al (719-465-3747, to let him know you'll be there!
  • Tuesday, August 15th, 8pm: RSVP for USS. at Juniper Valley Ranch on the 26th! See details below.
  • New Date! Sunday, August 27th 20th, 9am: Seven Bridges Mensa Hike! For our August hike, we'll be hitting Seven Bridges, a popular trail in the Cheyenne Canyon. The trail follows the North Cheyenne Creek and is named after, you guessed it, the seven bridges that cross it along the way. It's an easy trail, approximately 3.2 miles total (about 1.6 miles in, turn around and back out)! At the last bridge, there's a place to soak our feet before hiking back. Directions: Coming south on I-25 take exit 140, go south on Tejon and turn onto Cheyenne Blvd, which turns into Cheyenne Canyon Road (at Evans). Continue on Cheyenne Canyon Road past Helen Hunt Falls; the road will take a sharp right and turn into Canonwood Road. At the intersection of Canonwood and Gold Camp, there's a parking area. We'll meet at the parking lot at Sandy's car - she has a red Ford Explorer (with the gold Mensa logo on the back) and hit the trail promptly at 9:00 am, so you might want to arrive a few minutes early to get parked, get your hat/water/etc ready and find the group! Be sure to wear your hiking shoes and bring sun block and water, too! After the hike, if we want, there are several places nearby to go for late breakfast/early lunch!
  • Sunday, August 20th, 2:30-ish until whenever: Hangin' with the Lairds! It's the height of Summer! Come on over after and hang with the Lairds! Enjoy snacks, cold drinks of all kinds, and relax on the deck or in the shade of the old apple tree. Check out the how the garden is doing and enjoy a very relaxing afternoon! Kids are welcome. The Lairds live at 2990 Rhapsody Dr., CoS, 80920 Near Union and Briargate Blvd. (not Briargate Parkway) and the phone is: (719) 928-7997.
  • Saturday, August 26th, 6pm: Ultimate Saturday Supper at Juniper Valley Ranch! Get ready for some of the best skillet fried chicken or baked ham in the state as we venture south down Highway 115 to Juniper Valley Ranch Restaurant - in their 66th season. The chicken is $19.50 and the ham is $20.50 and is served family style! It includes an appetizer (curry consume or cherry cider), cole slaw, riced potatoes with cream gravy, okra casserole [Note from Sandy - the okra is excellent! Worth the trip alone!!], and a homemade biscuit with apple butter. For desert, you can choose a chocolate or butterscotch sundae, or a peppermint stick ice cream. This is a popular dining location so we'll need solid (and early) reservations for this! Call or e-mail Al (465-3747, by August 15th to get a place at the table. Juniper Valley is 13.5 miles south of Academy Blvd or 2 miles south of the US Army Turkey Creek Recreation Area, on South Highway 115. WARNING: Juniper Valley does not accept credit cards!
  • Advance Notice: Friday, September 1st, 5pm: Give In To Beer Pressure! In September, we're revisiting Cogstone! Sean's highly complex, secret algorithm (developed exclusively by Sean) has us circling back to some of the newer breweries now that they have become a little more established. Cogstone is located at 3858 Village Seven Road, near N. Carefree and Academy (another brewery in the NE part of town!) Let's see how Cogstone is working out! Remember, if you know of a good brew-pub or happy hour bar in the local area that we have missed, please let Sean know. He can be reached by email:, or by cell phone: (719) 651- 6706.
